Match Report | Burnham v Broadfields United – League, 30.08.2023
Burnham 2 – Broadfields United 4 – 30th August 2023 – Dean Butler
The unbeaten league run comes to an end with defeat at home to Broadfields United in an entertaining match under the lights.
Burnham got the match off to a flying start with a very high tempo opening and as with the previous few matches got a goal early on. Following some good work from Fran Naut and Anas Igozouln down the left hand side the ball was swung into the box and met by Jack Penton who cleverly flicked the ball with the outside of his foot over the keeper and into the net.
A deserved lead for the home side who for the first 20 were the dominant team. However, it was the visitors who got the next goal to level the score and after the equalizer the momentum of the game shifted towards the visitors who were firmly on the front foot. Yet despite this there were still opportunities for Leo Decabo and Jabir Laraba, both coming close to adding to the home sides tally. An excellent half of football from both sides finished all square with the visitors the happier of the two teams having finish the half stronger.

The second half seemed to continue as the first half finished with Broadfields having the edge, the next 45 + ET resulted in a further 4 goals and it was the visitors who, just after the hour mark, took the lead from the penalty spot after what appeared to be some shirt pulling in the box. The ref adjudged George Butler to have pulled down the Broadfield’s man. The game seemed to settle down for a period after the goal and both sides shared plenty of possession and opportunities to add to the scoreline.
With about fifteen minutes to go a ruthless spell from Broadfields saw them add two well taken goals in 5 minutes to put the game seemingly out of the home sides reach. However, the Blues kept plugging away and pulled one back late in the game when Jabir continued his fine scoring run to make the score 2-4 to the visitors. Burnham kept pushing to make the final few minutes interesting but couldn’t beat the Broadfield’s keeper.
A disappointing first league defeat against strong opposition who on refection deserved the 3 points. Plenty of positives to be taken and the Blues still sit second in the table after the opening 5 league games.
