Hooliganism drove me to discover Non League Football

Local supporter Brin Jones recalls the event that drove him towards Non League Football, for Blues Talk

As a youth, I went with my Dad to watch Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. There used to be a bus leaving Slough train station just after mid-day and many happy trips were experienced.

Then hooliganism took over and it scared the life out of me and put a stop to my visits to West London. I went several time to Elm Park in Reading, but all that stopped when hoolies chased us into Reading station. We jumped the barriers and saw a train leaving and ran for it. Slam doors were in place and we got on board the moving train, thinking we`d pay the conductor and get off at the next stop. No intermediate stops for a fast train to Redhill, so we paid up and settled down for the ride.

Too much grief seemed to be the order of the day, so my trips to the pro teams came to an end. I discovered amateur footie at Slough, Windsor and Eton, Maidenhead and, at times, Burnham.

Fast forward now and at the age of 71, I find satisfaction in watching local football at Burnham which is affordable for me and so enjoyable with great people to see and chat to. The highlight of my week is when there is an 1878 EXPERIENCE to enjoy. The best food anywhere in my opinion.

Local football is the best. X
